‘‘PVA had been working with our organization for a couple of years at several of our Thermal sites with some very positive success, when the decision was made to have them work with the Hydro & Wind energy group to implement a Continuous Improvement Process (CIP). I must admit, since I had never worked with PVA in the past, and I had seen many ‘Flavours of the Day’ planning processes implemented in my 22 years with this company, I was very cautious towards PVA.

One of the unique things about our team was the fact that we were not all working in a box similar to a Thermal Power Plant, but we were spread out geographically across the entire province. This challenge was met by many ‘road trips’ by me and the PVA team rolling out the project, our approach to implementation, education of the various groups on the tools of the process, and many more things.

We ‘sold’ the process with open and honest communications, including all employees in the decision making, including their feedback, and generally tweaking the process to ensure that everyone’s needs were met. After a couple of months of implementation, we started to see traction with the change and the ‘Key Performance Indicators’ that PVA helped us set up began to align and employees understanding of the system matured along with it.

PVA brought the industry knowledge to our team that helped our new planning team build a properly functioning Maintenance Planning system. They cleaned up the junk, and put information in place that made sense, and could be used for getting work done properly. PVA employees worked very well with all our employees, offered respectful coaching for employees who were challenged understanding change and the new tools, and had the tenacity to stick with us through to the end so that success was achieved. I personally enjoyed working with all members of PVA, I found them knowledgeable and respectful throughout the entire project.

It has been over a year now sense we started the implementation phase. Every passing week continues to improve the employees’ understanding and use of the tools put in place with CIP. The financial performance and efficiency gains we have reached would not have been possible without the guidance and structure that PVA brought into our business. All of my management team has been reenergized with this project because now they understand what is expected of them, how they will be measured, and how they will be held accountable for the hard work they do.

The tools that PVA have helped us develop for use as a Plant Manager have made my job so much easier. My sense of satisfaction with my own job has improved because I understand the health of our business; I know we are delivering value to the customer at the lowest possible cost. The wonderful thing with our CIP that PVA has helped us implement is that we will continue to improve moving forward. Status quo will not be acceptable to our employees as they want to see us continue to remove roadblocks that help them get their jobs done in more efficient ways.

MOS gives you the ability to hold people accountable and set expectations that are deliverable and sustainable, it gives you the information you need as a manager to make the right financial decisions on resource allocation!”

"PVA’S engagement positively affected work flow efficiency, planning and cost improvement. Existing systems already in place at the station were enhanced, along with additional tools put in place were gaps existed. PVA bring professional expertise in work flow management and provide results that are measurable. The process is established through a management operating system, providing continuous improvement and sustainability. We have attained the savings expected and I feel confident we can sustain the results and continue to improve.

PVA not only establish process, they provide one on one coaching for frontline Supervisors Department heads and Managers. Communication is a large part of the process, involving all employees at the station, who would not be considered in scope for the project. Communication is a large part of the process, involving all employees at the station, who would not be considered in scope for the project. Enhancement of existing processes was one of the pieces which provided the most value for me. Our Capital process for example was well established, however PVA helped developed a documented flow which is easy to follow and highlights areas of responsibility. The PVA process can be challenging and requires commitment. With the results I have seen, the commitment is well worth it. This is where we always wanted to get to with planned maintenance and we are well on the way."

"I have worked directly with the PVA organization for more than 4 years now and have completely enjoyed the experience along with the outcomes of their services. Their hands on approach and direct one on one interaction with the staff is the key to their success. We’ve attempted internal initiatives in the past but our operational nature always redirects resources away from achieving real change. Continuous Improvement is not feared any more, it is part of our culture and is woven into everything we do. The Brown Paper exercise, which seems so long ago, is still referenced today and has flushed out initiatives that continue to be realized today. Along with delivering what they said they would deliver, the close interaction with the PVA staff has opened up opportunities for efficiency that never were originally imagined. "PVA’s engagement at Trenton Generating Station positively affected work flow efficiency, planning processes and cost improvement. We saw PVA as a partner that integrated their process with existing systems that were already established at the plant. They conducted themselves in a professional manner and helped establish discipline, accountability and process improvements through a maintenance model that is results driven and measurable. I feel comfortable saying we attained the savings expected and we have structure for continuous improvement going forward.

The best part of the project was the management and frontline supervisory engagement and implementation of daily schedule control (DSC) process. PVA worked side by side with the plant management team in implementing the changes and coached the front line supervisors in communicating with employees in identifying opportunities for improvement. The training sessions were very well done and the coaching benefited all the team, including myself."

"PVA provided the focus, format and coaching to drive change and achieve savings faster than would have been possible without them. The representative onsite was a tremendous resource and extremely effective in leading the activities and communicating with all levels of the organization. The tools that were left from the PVA process will provide the basis for CI for years to come."

"PVA came into my department for an 8 month period and focused right away on Planning, Processes and Productivity.  The initial thought was that the culture of my department would cause significant challenges in implementing the PVA process, but other than a few minor bumps, it has been smooth sailing for the majority of the implementation.  I am pleased to say that we have now successfully implemented a weekly work plan, bi-weekly KPI’s, an opportunity-based Steering Committee, held multiple Supervisor coaching sessions, and significantly reduced overtime.  Overall the process has been very well received, the PVA staff have been great to work alongside, and I look forward to the next steps in my department’s ongoing Continuous Improvement process."
