Steel Joist Fabrication Company

STRUCTURAL STEEL SOLUTIONS FOR ANY PROJECT

COUNTRY: Canada, the United States and Mexico

PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

To improve the turnaround time for an order from its reception to its delivery to the Customer. This would be achieved through improvements being made to both the planning and order processing systems.

PVA’S RESPONSE:

To implement a standardized Management Operating System in all areas to optimize and control their processes and resources. In addition, Managers and Supervisors were provided with the appropriate training and coaching to increase their overall levels of active supervision. In particular, the project developed and implemented the following:

  • clear roles and responsibilities for Managers and Supervisors
  • improved lead time and flow of work between Engineering and Production
  • improved planning and reporting mechanisms
  • a Problem Resolution Mechanism that focused on operational issues

PROJECT RESULTS:

As a result our Client achieved :

  • improvements in hours/ton
  • improvements in the flow of work between Engineering and Production
  • improvements in the level of active supervision of the Supervisors and Managers

In addition, standards were developed for all areas, allowing for improved planning at all stages of the work order process.

A total of 10 projects were undertaken and successfully implemented across Canada, the United States and Mexico.

PERPETUATION OF RESULTS:

PVA has completed four system audits across all sites. Ownership has been successfully transferred to our client. Their Continuous Improvement Program continues to thrive and deliver results.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

"When we first met PVA, we were at the beginning of a productivity improvement program. Our management methods had to be reviewed and our work methods had to be analyzed and corrected. In an environment like ours change is not easily accepted.
After PVA did their initial audit of our process and demonstrated the relevance of making the proposed improvements, we met the PVA project team and were confident in their ability to work well with our people. In fact, this is exactly what occurred. Upon PVA's recommendation, a clear and open communication was then held with all our people, and I think that communication has been a key element of our success.
PVA knows how to combine the rigor of their system implementation with the constraints and requirements of daily production. The coaching required a lot of time from our supervisors and they knew how to manage that situation very successfully. Moreover, the implementation times were reduced because PVA communicated well and worked closely with our people, in order to involve them in the solutions.
Our financial expectations were met, and following their recommendation, we assigned someone to be responsible internally for the perpetuation of the system and for conducting regular audits. I congratulate PVA for their work."
