Luxury Yacht Manufacturer

SETTING A COURSE FOR SUCCESS

COUNTRY: Canada

PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

The objective was to streamline all of their work processes in all departments to allow for the implementation of an electronic swipe system for tracking hours to tasks completed. Their expectation was that these steps would lead to a reduction in the manufacturing cycle time (total hours required) for each of their respective yacht sizes.

PVA’S RESPONSE:

To implement a Management Operating System in all departments to better manage their processes. The system development primarily focused on the identification and estimation of every activity required to construct a yacht. This information fed the development of a Master Project Plan per yacht.

Training and coaching was also provided to the Supervisors and Managers that focused on clearly defining their roles and the behaviors required to attain the plan. Key Performance Indicators and reports were also installed to provide short term feedback on performance.

PROJECT RESULTS:

Some of the results that our Client achieved were:

  • a reduction of 34% in total labor hours required to manufacture the yachts, depending on the yacht size
  • improved coordination across trades through the Project Management Approach

In addition, active supervision increased substantially as improved expectations were being set, followed up on, and more attention was being given to removing variances.

PERPETUATION OF RESULTS:

A subsequent project was completed in Marketing and Sales to enhance their front end processes. Another training project was completed which focused on perpetuating the improvements. PVA has completed four system audits and ownership has been successfully transferred to our client. The conducting, sharing and presenting of their audit results by the Continuous Improvement Coordinator will continue to provide the feedback required to sustain the behavioral changes and the performance results.
