ACHIEVING A CLIMATE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
AREAS WORKED IN: Field Operations
COUNTRY: Canada
PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:
To improve the overall effectiveness of the Operations Group and to increase their levels of pro-active management. The result would be an overall lifting cost reduction by increasing production. They would also maintain or improve their safety performance throughout the change process.
PVA’S RESPONSE:
To install a customized Management Operating System that took into account the Client's self managed culture and kept intact their decentralized organization. The System would also include a problem resolution mechanism that would increase the involvement of employees in the process. In addition, training and on-the-job coaching would be provided to all Foremen and Superintendents to improve the effectiveness of their management skills. Some specific actions that contributed to the results were:

In addition, a Management Operating System was installed that included the implementation of best demonstrated targets for each area.
PERPETUATION OF RESULTS:
Collaboration continues between PVA and this Client as other areas are being brought into scope. In the areas completed, audits are being conducted to support their Management Operating System compliance and a successful implementation of their Continuous Improvement Program.

- improving the awareness of safety through both vertical and horizontal communication on a daily basis
- providing specific daily production targets to the Operators
- increasing awareness, ownership, and accountability of issues affecting attainment of the production targets
- decreasing the reaction time to production issues and increasing the quality of their responses
- improving the vertical communication of production issues
- implementing enhanced roles and responsibilities for Operators and Foremen
- implementing a climate of continuous improvement throughout the operations
PROJECT RESULTS:
Some of the results that our Client achieved were:
- improvements in the regularity and consistency of their communication on safety
- improved ownership of production issues
- improved timeliness of responses to production issues on safety
- improvements in Contractor costs
- improvements in the levels of pro-active management
- improvements in their levels of downtime
- improvements in production levels of approximately 10% net of capital investments
