DELIVERING SAVINGS TO THE BOTTOM LINE

COUNTRY: Canada

PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

To improve the Continuous Improvement climate and to focus primarily on process improvements and enhanced managerial skills. Additional objectives were to:

  • reduce overtime costs in Routine Maintenance and Operations
  • reduce Contractor costs

At all times, the project had to ensure that safety levels were maintained or improved and that all changes were sustainable.

    PVA’S RESPONSE:

To provide Supervisors and Managers with the appropriate training and coaching and the Management Operating System elements required to better manage their processes. In particular, the project addressed:

    • the implementation of planning elements as per measured standards
    • the implementation of control documents to better manage costs
    • the increased compliance to work due to more active follow-up
    • the more effective use of in-house and Contractor crews
    • the increased awareness and elimination of variances effecting production
    • the increased daily accountability on budget, actual and variance

    PROJECT RESULTS:

Some of the results that our Client achieved were:

    • 7.3% improvement (from base of 15% to 13.9%) in the levels of Operations overtime
    • 44.8% improvement (from base of 7.8% to 4.3%) in the levels of Routine Maintenance overtime

In addition, our Client attained 106% of the planned savings target.

    PERPETUATION OF RESULTS:

Collaboration continues between PVA and this Client as they transition from the project implementation phase to the follow-up phase. Visits and coaching continue with the trained internal resources who are now the driving force behind sustaining the project results. Audits are starting and they will provide the feedback required to closely monitor the behavioral changes and performance results. PVA will also conduct audits in order to support their Management Operating System compliance and a successful implementation of their Continuous Improvement Program.

    CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

"The big win was increasing the active supervision and re-defining the role of the Supervisor. This contributed to the results which are (currently) tracking to the targets."
    - Director, Operations
